Future Forum Leipzig – Dictatorship vs. Democracy

Logo Zukunftsforum Leipzig. Der Schatten der Diktatur über Europa.

October 11 and 12, 2024

New City Hall Leipzig, Martin-Luther-Ring 4, 04109 Leipzig

The Future Forum in Leipzig focuses on the following questions:

  • What does it mean to live in a dictatorship?
  • How can Western democracies resist the temptation of dictatorship?
  • What are the strengths of democracy and how can we emphasize them?
  • How can we fend off attacks of autocratic systems on our information spaces?

Special feature of the format: experts and interested citizens inform and discuss on an equal footing. For over two years, a citizens‘ movement from all parts of Germany has been campaigning on social media against destructive disinformation and for European values. They want to discuss their insights and findings together with experts such as journalists, historians, cultural and political scientists, lawyers and analysts.

Planned topics

On Friday, October 11, the topics “Media, autocracy and resilience” will be discussed.

This will deal with the question of how media function in dictatorships, how disinformation is countered in our media and which factors in media production influence social resilience.
Planned topics:

  • How does the press function in autocracies?
  • Trajectories to dictatorship
  • The shadow of dictatorship over German media
  • Speed – expectations of media consumers
  • Gatekeeping versus information disorder
  • Responsibility of social media actors

On Saturday, October 12, contemporary witnesses with experience of dictatorship from different parts of Europe will have their say.

Afterwards, the focus will be on the question of what strengths democracy can offer to counter this.

Interesting speakers have already confirmed their participation in the event. We are open to further suggestions.

Venue

The 2nd Future Forum will take place in the new City Hall of Leipzig. We are grateful to all those responsible for making this possible.
